The Lucas Family Graveyard at Elmwood

The Lucas Family Graveyard is located on the Elmwood Estate.  Elmwood is the house built by Edward Lucas III for his family circa 1797.  The graveyard however pre-dates Elmwood by nearly 50 years as it is the burial site of Edward Lucas III's ' father & his three wives.  Edward Lucas II, father of Edward Lucas III & William Lucas, moved to Virginia in 1732 with his wife Mary Darke.  Mary his first wife, died in 1743.  All five of their children were born on the land that surrounds Elmwood and was in the original grant of land to Edward Lucas II from Lord Fairfax.

The cemetery records here are from two family histories that were complied in the early 20th century.  The photos in the slide show were taken on a visit to the graveyard by the Foundations Executive Director in April 2015.  All markers in the cemetery are badly worn and most are unreadable.  The Foundation hopes to work with the current owners of the property to develop a program to preserve the cemetery and repair & restore the markers.

Fortunately due to the efforts of descendants of Edward Lucas II the graves at the Lucas Family Cemetery at Elmwood were added into the Findagrave Website in 2014.
